As businesses have resumed their activity in the First Quarter of 2021, our consultants continued to discuss the experiences and challenges faced by our clients and candidates on a daily basis.

Our consultants have maintained contact with clients, spanning the law firms (looking at practice groups with the greatest impact on commercial operations) as well as in-house legal teams within various sectors (e.g. financial services, FMCG, telcos, the automotive industry)

We have witnessed changes in hiring trends, from entry-level staff to more experienced attorneys, both in-house and in private practice
Some law firms have had their professional staff at the office from the end of 2020. A number of candidates have welcomed this, where home environments may be disruptive. In-house teams are, however, are still predominantly working from home.
Challenges in securing talent in specific business areas
The impact of the pandemic and its effect on business productivity where candidate promotions and salary increases are concerned.
Onboarding new employees remotely has presented challenges for many clients.
Virtual interviews continue to be used widely.

As businesses increased their activity in the Fourth Quarter of 2020, our consultants continued to discuss the experiences of and challenges faced by our clients and candidates on a daily basis.

Our consultants speak to hundreds of clients and candidates every month and we have distilled the notes from these discussions into some of the more prevalent themes that came out in our interactions.

As the 2020 year came to an end, the common themes our clients and candidates discussed were  –

  • Many of our clients are still planning to return to the office in Quarter 1, although some of these plans have been delayed with the recent adjusted alert level 3 announcement. 
  • Some smaller organisations have wanted a full return to the office but their employees have expressed concerns about their health and the risk of being infected with Covid-19. 
  • Many workers are enjoying working from home and are in no rush to return to the office. 
  • Candidates are making career moves generally for lower salary increases than in previous years. 
  • Onboarding new employees remotely has presented challenges for many clients.
